We opened the door, and there it was: a pipe with end caps, wires sticking out, and who knows what else inside. I turned to Sal and said, “Sal, I do believe that’s a bomb.”
We bolted back and called the authorities. The bomb squad, fire department, and police swarmed the area, and I even heard they shut down part of the airport for a while. Thankfully, it turned out not to be a real bomb, but it was designed to look like one.

The Deeper Issue
This incident led me to ask: Why would someone do this? What could drive a person to create a fake bomb and leave it in a truck?
I had been at the job for about a month, but I quickly realized this was not a happy workplace. The environment was tense and toxic. People weren’t appreciated or treated well, and there were rumors of mistreatment and disrespect.
This situation exemplifies a concept known as counterproductive work behavior—when employees act out or withdraw due to a negative work environment. Some might lash out, as the bomb-maker did, while others might disengage entirely, going through the motions at work without truly investing themselves.
So, what can be done to prevent such situations? The answer lies in leadership. No matter your job title, from the day you start your career to the day you retire, you hold the title of Chief Climate Officer.
Great leadership is about creating a positive culture and a healthy environment where people feel valued, respected, and safe. Harvard Professor Amy Edmondson calls this "psychological safety," where employees are free to be themselves and do their best work without fear of criticism or devaluation.
As leaders, our greatest contribution is not just in what we do, but in the climate we create. A positive workplace culture fosters engagement, productivity, and well-being. It prevents the kind of counterproductive behavior that arises from toxic environments.

Conclusion
So, to all the Chief Climate Officers out there, remember: Your role in shaping the work environment is crucial. Strive to create a place where people are not only motivated to do their best work but feel genuinely happy and secure. The ripple effect of a positive workplace climate is immense, influencing not just performance, but the overall success of the organization.
Go forth and make your environments marvelous!

The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

https://www.eigames.com/blog/the-power-of-emotional-intelligence-in-leadership

https://www.eigames.com/blog/the-power-of-emotional-intelligence-in-leadership#comments

Uncategorized

Today, I had the privilege of teaching a group of young Chinese students at Oxford. One of the key areas we discussed was the art of interviewing. To illustrate my points, I shared a personal story from my early career, which left a lasting impression on both me and my students.
The Interview ExperienceWhen I was a young aspirant eager to break into the advertising industry, I landed an interview with one of the largest agencies in the world. It was a grueling process, consisting of eight interviews in a single day. Most of the interviews went smoothly, and I felt confident—until the very last one.

As I entered the final interviewer’s office, I found him in the midst of a heated phone conversation. He was shouting, cursing, and clearly agitated. After slamming down the phone, he looked at me and curtly said, “Speak.” Instantly, I knew this interaction was going to be different. I thought to myself, “I’m not going to lower myself to his level.” The interview ended quickly, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

A Twist of FateFast forward 15 years, I was now in a senior position at McCann, responsible for interviewing chief executives for the combined firms we had acquired. During one such dinner with a prospective CEO, I had a startling realization—I knew this man. It was the same person who had treated me so poorly during that fateful interview years ago.
Teaching MomentI posed two questions to my students:

Did I reveal my identity to him?

The students unanimously responded, “No.”

Did I offer him the job?

Again, they shouted, “No.”

They were correct on both counts.
Key Takeaways

Maintain High Standards: Never lower your standards to meet others where they are. Always strive to maintain your professionalism and integrity, regardless of the situation.

Emotional Intelligence in Leadership: Leaders must possess emotional intelligence and a generous spirit. Without these qualities, they are unfit to lead others.

ConclusionThis experience underscores the importance of emotional intelligence and maintaining high personal standards, especially in leadership roles. It's a lesson I hope my students will carry with them as they embark on their own professional journeys.
Remember, true leadership is not just about authority; it’s about empathy, respect, and the ability to uplift those around you.

5 pitfalls to avoid when engaging students with gamified learning for the first time.

https://www.eigames.com/blog/5-pitfalls-to-avoid-when-engaging-students-with-gamified-learning-for-the-first-time

https://www.eigames.com/blog/5-pitfalls-to-avoid-when-engaging-students-with-gamified-learning-for-the-first-time#comments

Uncategorized

Be aware of these pitfalls: Not considering the learners' prior knowledge or experience: It is important to understand the learners' background and tailor the game accordingly to ensure that it is not too difficult or too easy for them.Focusing too heavily on the game aspect: While the game element is important, it should not detract from the learning objectives. Winners, we are told, are ruthless. They are strong, competitive, self-centered, and machiavellian. They have their own goals and their own ideals, and will stop at nothing to achieve their needs. Winners, we are told, are like sharks. As for the losers; they're more like their prey.

While there is arguably a nugget of truth buried within this way of thinking, there is also a whole lot wrong with this attitude. While attributes like self-assurance, tenacity, and resilience are key to finding success in today's ultra-competitive environment, this doesn't mean you need to be a shark, and it certainly doesn't mean you should be treating others as prey.

To the contrary, sensitivity, emotional intelligence, and vulnerability are not weaknesses. In actuality, they are key skills that allow us all to navigate our increasingly complex social environment. As such, If you want to succeed in anything, especially business, you should be embracing emotional intelligence, and taking pride in your ability to tune into others needs.

Don't believe me? Well, here are four ways in which emotional intelligence can help you succeed in the business world.

1. Self-Awareness:
As an emotionally intelligent person, you are more aware of yourself, and what makes you tick. You’re more aware of your strengths, your weaknesses and your goals. More important than this, however, you’re more aware of why you behave the way you do.

While this may not seem obvious in a world that seems to celebrate big and often ‘brash’ personalities, a heightened sense of self-reflection is indeed paramount to success. Think of this skill a bit like a coach for a major sports team. A team could have all the star players they want, but if they keep getting injured and underperforming without any feedback as to ‘why’ , said sports team will be doomed to run head first into the same old mistakes.

Likewise, in business, you need to be able to diagnose your own shortcomings, and identify areas in which you need to improve. Naturally, this isn't about ‘beating yourself up’. Instead, this is about understanding the true value of ‘humility’, and being ready to learn and develop at every opportunity.

2. Social Skills:
In addition to self-awareness, EQ also gives you a vital boost in understanding those around you.

Again, in business, this is hugely important. Regardless of sector, no individual ever truly operates alone. As a businessperson, you’re constantly interacting with other people, be this your colleagues, your employees, or your clients.

Suffice to say, within this environment, social skills and effective communication are essential. In order to obtain these skills, however, you need to be sensitive. You need to be capable of understanding other people’s motivations, their anxieties, their goals, and ultimately, their emotions. This is especially the case if you want to build long lasting and effective relationships.

3. Empathic creativity:
Empathy isn't just a social skill, but a creative one as well.

In business, what defines a great idea ultimately comes down to how it will be received by your target audience. Whether you work in marketing, product design or HR, your ‘performance’ hinges on your ability to cultivate an actionable understanding of your customers' needs.

Within this paradigm, great ideas are ones that reach their audiences in an authentic, impactful, and fundamentally considerate way. This is to say they are informed by a deep understanding of what their target audience truly wants.

Achieving this is no easy task. However, by being emotionally intelligent, and by possessing a genuine respect for your target audience, you are a massive step closer to fulfilling people's needs on a much deeper level.

4. Emotional intelligent leadership:
Last but not least, emotional intelligence is crucial to great leadership.

At an increasingly rapid rate, we are seeing the old guard of so-called ‘alpha males’ and ‘strong men' fall out of favor for more sympathetic and considerate leadership styles. Why? Because no one wants to work under a shark, and if they can help it, they'll go somewhere where they feel more valued, and where they know their voice will be heard. On the inverse of this, emotionally intelligent leaders are now being celebrated and sought after, especially as businesses look to diversify both their workplace and their audience.

Ultimately, emotionally intelligent leaders are now breaking ground because they combine all of the skills we’ve talked about so far. They’re self-aware, and are ready to accept feedback. They’re pro-social, and instinctively know how to motivate their staff. Finally, they’re empathic creatives, and can use their heightened sensitivity to solve problems and generate new ideas. Try getting a shark to do that!

A final note on emotional intelligence

So those were our four key areas in which EQ (emotional intelligence) can help you excel in the workplace.

As a final note on this topic, however, it’s also important to highlight that emotional intelligence is as much a skill, as it is an attribute. Like all things, some people will find being sensitive to the needs of others easy, while many will struggle, despite all their best intentions.

If you are facing these challenges, do not give up! No one expects you to excel at this from the offset, especially in a world where many of us still experience stigma around emotional availability and empathy. EQ is a skill that develops over time. High EQ people will understand that their sadness isn’t forever and that the purpose of this emotion is valid. Sadness promotes thoughtfulness, empathy, and resilience. It forces you to slow down and take time to understand the way that you are feeling. This emotion can give you the time to reflect on this moment in your life. Sadness requires nurturing so that you can learn to live with and respect this trauma, loss, or whatever it may be.

Tip: It’s okay to be sad, you don’t always have to put on a happy face. While happiness is generally the most desirable emotion, it is vital to understand that it is not the only emotion. Remember, negative emotions are temporary, and you will resume happiness once more.

Tip: Accept happiness wholeheartedly and stay present with your positive emotions.

Fear

Fear and anxiety can feel debilitating, but it also has the unique ability to create high amounts of energy. I'm going to talk to you about a notion and maybe one of the most important things that you will face, and maybe you faced already. It's something that is certainly one of the most difficult things for me to handle and its, how to deal with a Naysayer. Now I'll set the stage. I worked at a famous advertising agency, I was a young up-and-comer and one of the things that I noticed increasingly was the behavior of a fellow named Eric. Now, every time I turned around, there he was. "Oh, you're not going to do that, are you? You're never going to succeed in that, that will never work."

This man was my nemesis. I was on a shoot one afternoon, and it's pretty boring. You sit around for a while, and an idea came to me, brand citizenship. Wow. The idea that a brand is a community of individuals with a shared value system. Now, for those days, that was pretty forward-thinking stuff. And I shared it with a friend of mine at the agency. And he said to me, "Wow, Kevin, that's a heck of an idea. Every month the senior members of the board of McCann invite the young up-and-comers to present their ideas." And so, he got me a slot. It was just amazing. Little did I know it was the same conference room that I would occupy when I was part of running the company several years later.

But anyway, on the appointed day, I was as nervous as I could be, and I walk into the conference room, which we called Battlestar Galactica, it was enormous. Where I’m about to present was an empty chair for me to sit and who do you suppose is seated right next to that empty seat? Eric. I couldn't believe it, of all people. And as I sat down he leans over to me and he says, "You aren't going to present that brand citizenship nonsense, are you?" And of course, I was really taken aback. Now, I did get up and I did make my presentation. But, I did something that I'm going to ask you never to do. I didn't do anything about my idea from that day forward. I let Eric convince me that my idea was unworthy. I let him intimidate me into thinking that somehow what I was working on, wasn't worthy of being pursued.

The only person in this world that can and should prevent you from following your instinct about something you believe in is you, no one else. What does it take to create a great product that can act as a training guide for corporate employees?

The E.I. Games Diversity and Awareness Project launched in 2018. Our Diversity and Awareness game took extensive and careful research to craft an interactive experience that was reflective of actual real-life experiences, was relatable and truly resonated with each personality and experience level of the potential player. Our efforts were recognized by the Miami New Times for the participation of Miami’s LGBTQA+ community in its creation.

S.E.A.S. Model
We knew exactly where to start - the S.E.A.S model. The two-part course is based on the S.E.A.S model, an emotional intelligent approach to diversity, inclusion and equity practices and divided into four elements:

Self-Consciousness - Understanding who you are.
Empathy- placing yourself in someone else's shoes.
Accountability- Committing yourself to concrete actions.
Solidarity- Courageous in your support and celebration of others.

This Game helps corporations and aspiring professionals realize their own bias’ as well as the importance of diversity in the workplace through open education and conversation about sensitive topics. Whereas efforts in the past focused on racial and gender diversity in the workplace, the contemporary organization must take into account areas of identity that were not focused on before. Inclusion shines the spotlight on the meaningful ways members of an organization participate in their day to day, while equity realizes that power, responsibility, and consequences need to be leveled out within an organization.
What’s Next - E.I. We feel that our Diversity, Inclusion and Equity is incredibly important and could be even more impactful as part of a well-rounded program. I am struck every time I hear this term what a poor role model it implies and how utterly wrongheaded the idea is the first instance. Success in today’s world is based on emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, empathy and authenticity…all to the contrary of what the badass notion implies. In the extreme it is a term that provides cultural permission for internal aggression and a host of manifestations that are the ruination of companies.

In a recent study by the globally respected Weber Shandwick, Civility in America, from 2011-2013 showed a 30% increase in American workers reporting that they quit a job because it was an "uncivil" workplace. Badass does not build companies.

I should know, as I cut my teeth at one of the advertising industries most notable badass cultures, McCann Erickson. The currency of McCann was how aggressive you were, opinionated you could be, loud you could argue, and how many swear words you could fit in a sentence. Meetings were contests and debates shouting matches. It was all about who could be the loudest, toughest, scariest, most predatory player, all with a lexicon to go with it. Well, that badass behavior led to its near collapse. In my view a purging of the badass mentality and people who promoted it, was a cornerstone of its renaissance I was a part of and Agency of the Year status that resulted five years later.

Back in the high tech arena following the passing of Steve Jobs, it should not go unnoticed the bravery and authenticity of Tim Cook’s leadership and the propulsion of Apple’s continued success under his emotionally intelligent leadership as well as the addition of Angela Ahrendts, one of the most celebrated CEOs of this era and a person I have had the joy to see at work up close. She is truly the embodiment of 21st century emotionally intelligent leader, who places the careful nurturance of a constructive culture as a centerpiece. Make no mistake: this formidable woman is no shrinking violet. Bold, decisive, creative, of strong opinions and true risk-taker, she is also generous of spirit, inclusive and places a high standard for emotional intelligence in her leadership ranks and leads by uniting people around creating something special. Her mantras are, “We have the power to touch and transform lives,” and “The power of human energy.” It’s a brilliant stroke by Apple, who in my view evidences an urgency that there’s little place for badass in its journey of continued vitality and relevance.

They say pride goeth before the fall. I say badass is the rocket fuel for it.

E I Games Launches Emotional Intelligent Diversity Inclusion and Equity Course in Breakthrough Online Format

https://www.eigames.com/blog/e-i-games-launches-emotional-intelligent-diversity-inclusion-and-equity-course-in-breakthrough-online-format

https://www.eigames.com/blog/e-i-games-launches-emotional-intelligent-diversity-inclusion-and-equity-course-in-breakthrough-online-format#comments

diversity

emotional intelligence

student success

E I Games LLC, makers of award-winning game-based business simulation training has launched a new course and simulation in Diversity, Inclusion and Equity now offering companies an uplifting and contemporary approach to the subject in a highly engaging on-line format. This follows the development of game-based simulations in leadership, Business Ethics and Entrepreneurship in partnership with Universities like Arizona State, Ball State and companies like Oracle and Expedia. Characteristic of the course include:
Aligns with Emotional Intelligence: The training experience is built as a Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity learning module but leverages the strengths of emotional intelligence. It links the skills of empathy and self-awareness of E I into the Diversity experience in the form of the SEAS model developed by Best Selling author and company founder Kevin Allen.

Scalable: It is designed as an individual exercise that employees can take within an hour or so on their laptop or mobile phone. The learnings can then be enhanced by online webinar and team coaching.
Thought-provoking: Questions and scenarios are taken from everyday life and designed to appeal to all participants For example, some questions in the game deal with religious expression as a form of personal identity and celebrate the positive aspects of such expression as strongly as the more well-known forms.
Provides an Organizational Benchmark: At the end of the exercise, employees are given a score and a profile. The score measures overall diversity sensitivity and the profile score measures sensitivity based on the SEAS model providing a four-part rubric, Self-consciousness, Empathy, Accountability and Solidarity.

One of the early proponents includes Dr. Brent Scholar of Arizona State University and Dr. Ramon’s Jacobs, an MD, corporate executive, and a leader in Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, who observed, “My first impression of the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity training module via E I Games: brilliant! As a diversity and inclusion expert, I am well aware of stale and ineffective training modules on the market. Given the significance of diversity and inclusion awareness in the workplace, it is immensely important that these training modalities get it right the first time. The module by E I Games is exciting and engaging. Most importantly, it captures the interest of people in a witty, charming and imaginative way. One leaves the training feeling that they themselves can be experts on diversity, inclusion and equity. Kudos to this organization for changing the game!"

For more information write to kevin@eigames.com. Here are a few of the reasons why students are dropping out of college.

High costs

Earning a college degree is the only way for many students to unlock their career opportunities, but the cost can be prohibitive. Education costs have risen at an alarming rate, with students at public four-year colleges paying over $36,000 in tuition, fees, accommodation, and board fees. Their counterparts in private schools are spending an average of $46,000. The rising cost of tuition is out of reach for many students, and this can have a direct impact on the college dropout rate. Many students have issues finding money to clear the exorbitant cost of a college degree and are forced to either delay their graduation or drop out of school.

Students are academically unprepared

From grasping complex topics to getting your first thesis correct, a college education can be overwhelming. Many students meet the minimum requirements to be accepted in a college, but they are not well prepared for university classes. A good number of these students are from low-income families and have low SAT scores, usually in the range of 1,000 to 1,600 points. Unfortunately, universities send these struggling students to remedial courses, and for many, this is a precursor to dropping out.

What can we do about it?
Universities are finding new ways to combat this problem, including incorporating new technology strategies to engage students while educating them about the resources they have at their disposal throughout their campus life.

Ball State University has partnered with E.I. Games to create the Student Success Game, a game-based learning simulation that helps students with issues ranging from getting prepared for the course load and homesickness, to course planning and dealing with the stress of balancing work and academics.

To Find Out More on Student Success Game: Click here

#seriousgames, #emotionalintelligence, #elearning, #gamification, #college,
#university, #businesscourse, #leadershiptraining, #managementtraining, #training, #diversity, #training, #edtech, #educationtechnology, #elearning #blendedlearning #onlinelearning #onlineeducation, #educationaltechnology, #digitallearning, #onlinetraining, #studentsuccess, #studentretention, #collegedegree

E.I.
