Sometimes they should inhabit the position of a first-year student, a frustrated employee, a customer with limited information, or a peer who feels excluded from decision-making. Rotating roles widens perspective and prevents empathy from becoming a one-way exercise.
Feedback loops matter too. Simulations are especially effective when students can see consequences unfold. A dismissive response might shorten a conversation in the moment but create disengagement later. A thoughtful question might slow the exchange but uncover information that leads to a better outcome. Those delayed effects teach students that empathy is not separate from performance. It improves judgment.

Another mistake is over-explaining the right answer. If every scenario ends with the instructor revealing the correct empathetic response, students may become dependent on cues rather than developing judgment. Measuring whether empathy actually improved
If empathy is a learning objective, it should be observable in more than student self-reports. Reflection is useful, but it is only one signal. Look at the language students use during debrief, the questions they ask before making decisions, and whether they revise their approach after seeing consequences.
You can also evaluate growth through written analysis, peer discussion quality, or comparison across repeated simulation rounds. Are students identifying stakeholder perspectives more clearly? Are they less likely to jump to motive-based judgments? Are they considering context before recommending action?
