Instead of asking students to explain empathy, ethical leadership, or effective communication in the abstract, you place them in a situation where their choices carry visible consequences. The question of how to run virtual simulations is not primarily about technology. It is about designing an experience that gives students a reason to think, decide, discuss, and reflect.

For college instructors, the strongest simulations do more than fill class time. They create a shared experience students can analyze together, even when they are learning from different locations. With thoughtful facilitation, virtual simulations turn passive attendance into active practice for the decisions students will face in academic, professional, and personal settings.

Start With a Skill Students Need to Practice

A simulation should begin with a learning outcome, not a platform. Ask what students should be able to do differently after the activity. Ask students to name one decision they would revisit, one perspective they had not considered, and one action they can carry into a future team project, internship, or workplace conversation. Use Evidence to Improve the Next Run

Virtual simulations are most effective when instructors treat them as repeatable learning experiences, not one-time events. Review student reflections, discussion themes, completion data, and assessment results. Look for evidence of growth, but also look for confusion. If students repeatedly misread a scenario or struggle to connect choices to course concepts, the issue may be in the framing or debrief rather than in the students themselves.

A short pre- and post-activity prompt can reveal changes in confidence or reasoning. You might ask students how they would handle a challenging conversation before the simulation and revisit the same question afterward.
